Materials:
1 Hank Malabrigo Rasta in Lettuce
1 pair 12 mm needles
1 pair 10 mm needles
1 large pompom maker
1 darning needle

Sizes:
small (child)
large (adult)
(Size large is shown above)

Abbreviations :
k= knit; p = purl; m1= make one by picking up bar between stitches and knitting through the back of the loop; k1fb = knit one into the front of stitch, then without removing stitch from needle, knit into the back of the same stitch; sts = stitches ; k2tog= knit next 2 stitches together; ssk= slip next two stitches ONE AT A TIME knitwise, insert left hand needle into the fronts of the two stitches from left to right, knit these two stitches together.

Pattern:
Note: Hat is worked flat from top down

Cast on 5 sts
Row 1: k1fb 5 times (10 sts)
Row 2: purl
Row 3: k2, m1, k2, m1,k2, m1, k2, m1, k2
Row 4, and all other odd numbered rows: purl
Row 5: (k3, m1), repeat (...) to last 2 sts, k2
Row 7: (k4, m1), repeat (...) to last 2 sts, k2
Row 9: (k5, m1), repeat (...) to last 2 sts, k2
Row 11(k6, m1), repeat (...) to last 2 sts, k2
Row 13: (k7, m1), repeat (...) to last 2 sts, k2 (34 sts)

FOR LARGE SIZE ONLY
Row 14: Purl
Row 15: (k8, m1), repeat (...) to last 2 sts, k2 (38 sts)

Continue working in stocking stitch for 3 (5) more rows

Next row: Cast off 4 (5), Knit 8 sts, TURN
(1st earflap)
Row 2: purl
Row 3: knit
Row 4: purl
Row 5: knit
Row 6: purl
Row 7: k1, ssk, k2, k2tog, k1
Row 8 purl
Row 9: k1, ssk, k2tog, k1
Cast off remaining 4 sts, break yarn

Rejoin yarn to remaining stitches, cast off 10 (12) sts knitwise, k8 TURN
repeat rows 2-9 for second earflap as for first the ear flap, cast off remaining 4sts, break yarn

Rejoin yarn to remaining 4 (5) sts, cast off knitwise. DO NOT BREAK YARN

Edging: With 10 mm, pick up and knit approximately 62 (66)  sts along edge of hat
Knit 1 row
With 12 mm needle, cast off loosely knitwise
Break yarn, insuring to leave a tail 3x the length of the back seam of the hat.

Sew back seam of hat using mattress stitch.
Weave in all ends

Add pompom or flap braids if desired.
